چکیده

The present communication deals with the distribution and population fluctuation of Indoplanorbis exustus under the impact of variant abiotic factors in Doon Valley, Uttarakhand. Further the study also revealed the effects of some physico-chemical parameters, like pH, water temperature, dissolved oxygen, free carbon dioxide on the occurrence and abundance of snail Indoplanorbis exustus in the vicinity of Doon Valley. The study involved sampling for a year from water bodies of various localities of Doon valley. Analysis of the data revealed that the physico-chemistry of the stream exercised profound effect on the distribution and population fluctuation of the fresh water snails. Significant changes in freshwater snail assemblages were primarily due to changes in the water quality from locality to locality. Coefficient of correlation (r) between population and physico-chemical parameters revealed significant relationship with population of the snail Indoplanorbis exustus. The study also revealed the existence of seasonal variation in the incidence of the species surveyed in different localities. The highest incidence of the snail have been found in monsoon season followed by post monsoon and winter seasons, while least incidence was reported in summer season indicated its thermophobic nature. The species was also found positive for different types of cercarial infection in selected localities.

Occurrence of a Snail Borne Disease, Cercarial Dermatitis (Swimmer Itch) in Doon Valley (Uttarakhand), India

BACKGROUND 'Cercarial dermatitis' also known as swimmers itch (Skin allergies) is caused by a trematode parasite, Schistosoma which has two hosts - an invertebrate (snail) and a vertebrate (livestock, human being). Although the availability of both vector snails and pathogens at the selected site the Doon Valley in northern India has already been confirmed but there was a hazy picture of the di...

Effect of desiccation on freshwater snail, Indoplanorbis exustus, intermediate host of schistosomiasis.

Under laboratory conditions, snail Indoplanorbis exustus exhibited a strongly positive linear correlationship between duration of desiccation to mortality and body-weight loss and also body-weight loss to mortality. The adult stage of snail is highly resistant to desiccation, whereas the juvenile stage is highly susceptible. Reasons for decrease in susceptibility to desiccation with increase in...

On the Discovery and Prevalence of Schistosoma Spindale (montgomery, 1906) in Thailand.

Schistosoma spindale (Montgomery, 1906) has never been reported in Thailand, since this worm was discovered by Montgomery (1906) in two plain cattle (Bos indices) at Muktesar in India. Liston and Soparkar (1918) completed its life cycle in the goat infected with one kind of furcocercous cercariae obtained from a fresh water snail, Planorbis exustus (synonym of Indoplanorbis exustus). In 1960 an...

-Molluscicidal Activity of Different Organic Solvent Latex Extracts of Some Common Euphorbiales against Freshwater Harmful Snails

Molluscicidal activity of different organic solvent extracts of latex of Euphorbia pulcherima and Euphorbia hirta (Family-Euphorbiaceae) against two freshwater harmful snails Lymnaea acuminata and Indoplanorbis exustus has been reported. Both the snails are the intermediate hosts of Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica, which cause endemic fascioliasis in cattle and livestock of Eastern par...

The molluscicidal activities of some Euphorbia milii hybrids against the snail Indoplanorbis exustus.

The objective of this study was to observe the molluscicidal activities of Euphorbia milli, known as "poysean" in Thailand, against Indoplanorbis exustus. Latex from 12 different E. milii hybrids was screened for its molluscicidal activities. Indoplanorbis exustus were exposed for 24 and 48 hours to the latex at various concentrations ranging from 6 to 25 ppm and mortality rates were recorded. ...
